Exploring Reykjavík on Foot

On my first free day, I set out to explore the western part of Reykjavík.

Destination: Grótta Lighthouse
Estimated walking time: 3.5 hours
Actual walking time: 5 hours

Grótta Lighthouse

how I wandered between the streets there (left) and back (right)

The weather was perfect—17°C with no wind—so I regretted wearing a sweater.

To sum up the trip: western Reykjavík is beautiful! Runners and cyclists, football fields, local swimming pools, volcanic rocks, birds, lush greenery, wooden houses, white facades, salty sea air—that’s how the day plays out in my mind.

LAVA EVERYWHERE

Back home by the sea, we’re used to piles of limestone rocks filled with fossilised shell fragments. Here, it’s solidified lava. That’s what fascinates me most about Iceland—igneous rocks are simply everywhere!

CONTRASTS

It’s actually hard to find anything without contrast here.

Harpa

Concert Hall & Conference Centre

Harpa is a building I admire every time I pass by, whether through a window or on my way to the harbour. What makes it special is how it constantly changes—its glass surfaces shift colours from minute to minute. I can promise you, these photos won’t be lonely for long.

CAUTION! - AREA UNDER CONSTRUCTION! Ljubljana No.2
"Eh, those colours are just for the tourists..."
I still believe they’re actually growing lettuce in those flower pots.
Reykjavík’s style? Every shade on the palette is acceptable.
If they choose white, they must accept the cost of regular repainting—which they actually do. You won’t see stains, mould, or peeling paint on these facades.
Football fields are everywhere. Apparently, nearly 10% of the population (33,000 out of 340,000) plays football regularly.
Iceland poppy (Oreomecon nudicaulis)
The trail to the lighthouse. Benches with a sea view on every corner. And they’re free!

Algae...

you never seemed particularly tidy to me…

…but this is really getting out of hand!

That’s it for one of my little adventures. Cities will be cities… but more NATURE—soon!

First, I’d love to share some of our marine finds. 😉
