Blue Lagoon

After a few days of Viking-style sea voyages, it was time for some well-earned relaxation.

You’ve probably heard of Blue Lagoon, ranked among the 25 Wonders of the World by National Geographic, but I might still have a few surprises for you.

Did you know?

Blue Lagoon wasn’t always here. It was actually created by accident in 1974 by workers at a geothermal power plant on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 40 minutes from Reykjavík.

That year, something unexpected happened—38°C (100°F) mineral-rich seawater started flowing uncontrollably to the surface, flooding the entire area.

At first, it was seen as a disaster. But soon, shock and disappointment turned into fascination—first with the natural phenomenon and later with its promising business potential.

What makes Blue Lagoon so special?

SILICA (SiO₂)

a compound found in lava that, when mixed with seawater, separates and transforms into the famous white mud known for its skin benefits

CYANOBACTERIA

A unique species discovered in the lagoon a few years after its formation. A decade later, Blue Lagoon started cultivating these microorganisms in a private research center, where they now produce various skincare products.

MINERALS

A blend of sea salt and trace elements with skin-rejuvenating benefits (yes, you can try the green algae mask while soaking!)

Since its discovery, the Blue Lagoon has been expanded, with the addition of two premium hotels and a restaurant, as well as a relocation to a new site.

In the outer, unfenced area, nestled among the lava fields of Illahraun, lies another small blue lake—a breathtaking sight, especially on a sunny day. A stunning landscape, truly unlike anything else in the world!

What enchanted me?

The perfectly warm water
A surreal color palette – white, blue, and black
Magical silence, despite the number of visitors
Steam rising into the crisp air, creating an ethereal atmosphere
A refreshing silica face mask, straight from the source
Modern, stylish facilities that blend seamlessly with nature

For the first time, I can wholeheartedly say that a world-famous attraction is absolutely worth it—both in experience and price. You can easily spend an entire day here, soaking in the lagoon, unwinding in the sauna, grabbing a drink at the café, then returning to the water… then the sauna again… and again…

A true retreat for the body and soul.

Bonus tip: Blue Lagoon is right on the way to the airport, making it the perfect last stop before heading home!

Scroll down for some moments—captured using cutting-edge technology (a.k.a., my phone in a waterproof case). It worked surprisingly well!

Thanks for reading! My time for writing is running out, so fingers crossed I manage one last post before that happens.
